Mongolia Workshop Report

Evidence-Based Perinatal Care Symposium and Workshop

Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. Aug 1-3, 2011

The Federation of Asia Oceania Perinatal Societies (FAOPS), through its Deputy Secretary General for Eastern region, conducted a 3-day perinatal symposium and workshop at Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia last Aug 1-3, 2011. Collaborative efforts with the Mongolian Perinatal Association which served as the local organizing committee, made the workshop very informative, relevant and successful.

FAOPS President, Dr. Ranjan Pejaver together with his Deputy Secretary General for Eastern Region, Dr. Socorro Mendoza and Perinatal Association of the Philippines’ former President Dr. Raul Quillamor conceptualized and conducted the two-day program while a one-day pre-symposium workshop was conducted by the Mongolian Perinatal Association Deputy Director, Dr. Gerelmaa Zagd. The symposium and workshops focused on the current evidence-based perinatal interventions that have been shown to help achieve MDG’s 4 & 5. This activity was jointly supported by the Mongolian Ministry of Health, the UNICEF, the Mongolian Perinatal Association and FAOPS. Lectures on life-saving perinatal interventions, perinatal asphyxia, IUGR, Special care for the preterm and LBW, amniotic fluid embolism, perinatal infection, and respiratory distress syndrome were tackled on day 1. The following day, an obstetrical workshop on perinatal asphyxia utilizing case scenarios, was led by Dr. Raul Quillamor for the Obstetricians in the audience, while a workshop on Kangaroo Mother care was conducted by Dr. Socorro Mendoza for the Pediatricians and Neonatologists. Both Dr. Quillamor and Dr. Mendoza were assisted by local faculty and no less than the FAOPS President Dr. Pejaver also helped conduct the KMC workshop.

The symposium and workshop was attended by sixty-five (65) Obstetricians and Neonatologists. Present during the opening reception and graduation ceremonies were officials from the following Mongolian health organizations: 1)Ministry Of Health : J. Tsolmon -Vice-minister. D.Gonchisuren- Chairman of MCPIC Department, Ya. Buyanjargal- Officer, MCPIC Department. 2)UNICEF: Rana Flowers -Country Representative, V.Surenchimeg- Maternal and child health and nutrition Officer, 3)Mongolian Perinatal Association: T. Erkhembaatar-President, Z. Gerelmaa-Deputy Director, B. Bayasgalantai- Secretary.4) National Center for Maternal and Child Health Sh.Enhtur- General director.

The FAOPS faculty also experienced the warm hospitality of the Mongolian Perinatal Association through its Deputy Director, Dr. Gerelmaa Zagd and its Secretary Dr. Bayasgalantai Bavuusuren. They were given an orientation tour of its rich cultural heritage, its lifestyle, music, and culinary delights. The rapid urbanization of Ulaanbataar was likewise evident in this capital city of Mongolia. This rapid urbanization notwithstanding, Mongolia has prioritized and achieved its MDG 4 & 5 through an efficient system of implementation of key programs and interventions recommended by global health care organizations. The FAOPS symposium and workshop served to enhance the knowledge and skills of the practitioners in the field of perinatology to further this cause for the women and children of Mongolia.
